BT researchers recognised for workplace morale study

BT researchers recognised 

Three researchers, two of them from BT, have won a top award from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) for their study about morale in the workplace.

Dr Tanya Alcock and Dr Jon Malpass from the research and innovation team in BT Technology, Service & Operations, together with Dr Ben Hardy of the Open University Business School, picked up the CMI’s prestigious Management Article of the Year prize.

This annual competition celebrates the cream of research into management and leadership, and the winning article is one of five top-ranked essays recognised by the CMI.

In ‘Morale: unravelling its components and testing its impact within contact centres ’ the trio explore workplace morale and its impact on business performance.

Deserving our attention

Tanya said: “We are absolutely delighted that our research work has received recognition from the CMI. It's great when such an important issue as employee morale and wellbeing gets the attention it deserves.”

She added: “A lot of hard work went into the research and we are completely indebted to the people in BT’s contact centres who gave us their time and assisted us in the study. Without them this work simply wouldn’t have happened.”

Dr Tim Whitley, head of research for BT, said: “Prestigious awards, such as CMI’s Management Article of the Year, are of vital importance, placing BT centre stage for reputation and thought leadership excellence, as well as reflecting on the high quality innovative work produced by our research and innovation team.”

Making the difference

CMI chief executive, Ann Francke, said: “Morale matters for managers and this research shows why, with great, real-world evidence that the way employees are managed makes all the difference to their morale and their performance.”

The article’s top three recommendations for managers to inspire better morale in teams are:

Show employees they’re valued by the organisation and add value

Focus on the future, ensuring employees are aware of the direction that the company is heading and feel a sense of optimism for what the future holds

Build and encourage interpersonal relationships by fostering a collaborative atmosphere through nurturing and coaching, rather than criticism, and encourage teamwork.

The study was based on interviews with people in the UK, and resulted in a practical guide that provides employers with ideas for increasing morale in the workplace.
