BT scoops innovation award for next-generation optical fibre project

Global Telecom Business Awards

A groundbreaking initiative examining how BT’s global network might support future demands for bandwidth has been recognised at the Global Telecom Business Awards.

BT and its partner Huawei picked up the ‘Fixed Network Infrastructure Innovation’ award for their collaborative project, ‘Growing core capacity to match access demand.’

The judges of the award acknowledged the innovative and work carried out by BT Ireland, BT Technology, Service & Operations (TSO) and Huawei. This included a world-beating 3 Terabit optical fibre transmission live trial, a 400Gbs transmission through existing 10Gps, 40Gps and 100Gbps wavelengths, and the subsequent application of the technology ‘live’ on BT’s Belfast-Dublin network alongside existing traffic.

Proven capability

The results of the trial proved that BT’s current core network has the capability to support this next generation transmission technology.

Findings also revealed how BT’s core fibre optic infrastructure could work even more efficiently in the future, helping to reduce the need to invest in more infrastructure as customers’ bandwidth demands grow.

Alex Crossan, managing director, commercial networks, BT Ireland, said: “This was a great example of fast-track innovation in practice. It was a really exciting and successful project, with the team moving quickly - in just three months - from research and early prototype development to real world deployment. And BT needs to do this to satisfy the burgeoning bandwidth demands on our networks, and to deliver it cost effectively so our customers can benefit.”

Innovative services

In presenting the awards, Alan Burkitt-Gray, editor of Global Telecoms Business, said:

“This is the ninth time we’ve run our Innovation Awards and each year we’ve seen that the industry is working harder and harder to deliver exciting and innovative services to its customers worldwide. Congratulations to BT and Huawei and all the award winners."
