Privacy

We’re open and honest about how and why we collect and use your personal information. We might collect information like your name and email address, and share it inside BT to manage your account and offer services you might be interested in. We’re registered under UK data protection laws and do everything we can to keep your personal information safe.

For example, we:

  • Make security integral to our products - From the start of the design process, privacy and protection are at the core of our technology and systems.
  • Take part in debate - We’re part of discussion groups to keep up with what consumers, companies, regulators and governments want.
  • Share our expertise - We work closely with regulators in the countries we operate in.
  • Train our people - Our employees know how important data protection and privacy are, and what they have to do to protect your personal information. All our employees do privacy training, and we run workshops for staff who directly manage customers’ data.

Security

We’ve got robust security systems in place to make sure your personal data stays safe. And you can take advantage of our advice and free software to protect you and your family online.

For example, we developed BT Protect which helps prevent infection from all sorts of nasty viruses and spyware by warning you if you’re about to visit a potentially harmful website whenever you’re browsing online using your BT broadband connection.

As well as protecting our own customers’ data, BT Enterprise customers around the world rely on our security services to protect their clients’ details. For full details, visit our website.

Behind the scenes, our Security Operations Centres monitor our customers’ devices 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to spot breaches and potential weaknesses and to keep our network secure. We work to internationally recognised security standards like ISO 27002 (the International Code of Practice for Information Security Management).

We’re always reviewing our data security standards and making them better. In 2013, we collaborated with other UK internet service providers and the government to develop the ‘Guiding Principles on Cyber Security’. We signed up to these principles to show we’re committed to helping our customers understand online threats, and giving them security tools and advice.
